Buttercup or ranunculus inundatus (Ranunculus inundatus)
The homeland of the buttercup is considered the southeastern part of Australia. The plant has a beautiful appearance and unusual leaves.
But in aquariums, buttercups began to grow relatively recently, only a few years ago. The main part of buttercup plants grows in swampy areas, and only a few of their species, including ranunculus inundatus, can grow in rivers completely submerged in water. It is because of the unusual shape of the leaves that aquarists choose it. Many algae react negatively to changing climatic conditions and at the same time change their color, but the leaves of a water buttercup always remain soft green no matter what. And this feature is very important if the aquarium is decorated in a certain contrast.
Conditions of detention
In good light, the ranunculus can grow up to 8 cm in height. Otherwise, with a lack of light, it can become a real giant. When the buttercup grows in the same aquarium with other plants, it will tend to become the largest, and capture as much light as possible.
Therefore, when growing, you need to pay attention to this factor, and give it enough space and light. The soil should be from medium-sized fractions and slightly silted. The optimum water temperature should be between 7 and 130C. The level of water hardness does not matter.
The main part of the stem is located in the ground, and new shoots grow from it at a distance of 3 to 5 cm. The plant has long, not numerous roots. In order for the bush to be thick, you need to periodically trim the tops, and so that the growth is in the right direction, you can fix it with brackets.
After the ranunculus is transplanted to a new place, the first month it will not grow, and only then, when it is mastered, it begins to actively develop. In addition, it is actively growing all year, regardless of whether it is summer or winter.
There is another important factor that you need to pay attention to when growing this plant. It is impossible that the leaves cover each other. This can cause abnormal growth and general condition. If the buttercup will grow in the air, then soon it will delight with its flowering delicate yellow flowers, after which the seeds are formed.
To create aqua-design in an aquarium, this plant is suitable for both the foreground and the middle. This plant is also suitable for forming aquascapes or a specific accent.
In low light conditions in an aquarium, water buttercup is best used for the average plan. Otherwise, it is recommended to plant among the stones so that the shoots are covered. If you use it as a foreground, then there should be intense lighting, in this case the stalks of the ranuncusus will not stretch and the leaves will be shorter. To create a carpet, it is rarely used, but in combination with other algae, you get a beautiful view. After the adaptation period, the plant begins to grow rapidly, so you need to periodically prune young shoots to create a beautiful green bush.
Propagated water buttercup in several ways. The first method is the seed one, after the plant blooms in yellow flowers seeds are formed from them. But this is only possible if the ranuncusus grows in air. Also, it is able to multiply using cuttings that grow from the rhizome. After the new shoots are strong enough and leaves appear on them, they can be separated from the mother bush and planted as an independent plant.
