Ludwig red or creeping (Ludwigia Repens)
Ludwigia red or creeping (Ludwigia Repens), due to its decorativeness and ease of care, is considered one of the most popular aquarium plants.
In the natural environment grows in America, in the northern and central regions. The plant can be seen along the shores of lakes, rivers, small ponds, ditches.
Ludwig red has a long creeping stalk of red color. Moreover, its saturation depends on the level of lighting. Plant height up to 50 cm. Oval leaves are located on the stem. More often there are instances in which the upper part of the plant is red, the lower is colored dark green. Ludwigia red - amphibian, reaching the edge of the water, grows higher. If the correct conditions of maintenance are selected for the plant, it blooms, and a bright flower appears on the surface, reaching a diameter of 0.5 cm.
How does a plant reproduce?
The plant propagates by cuttings. Cuttings are cut from the top of an adult plant. It is enough to take a piece of 10 cm. Planting material is placed in fine-grained soil, where roots are formed quite quickly. At the stem, from which the crown was cut off, a large number of lateral shoots are formed.
Placement in the aquarium
Ludwig red is perfect for creating contrasting compositions. The plant responds well to the haircut, this feature allows you to use it in any part of the aquarium. If you plant it in the background, you get a red-green background that resembles a forest. With a regular haircut, due to the growth of shoots, you can get free-standing beautiful plants suitable for the central part and foreground of the aquarium panorama
Ludwig Creeping cannot stand the shade; when placing it, it is necessary to avoid the proximity to representatives of broadleaf flora. If the plant lacks light, it will stop growing, then it will die completely.
In an aquarium, the plant performs not only a decorative function. Fry and weakened fish use it for shelter. It purifies water, feeding on organics in the water. Enriches the environment with oxygen. Fish hide in it for spawning. In addition, it is a food for some aquarium inhabitants. But fish that love to dig the soil will be bad neighbors for this plant. They can simply pull out ludwig with a root.
Features in the care of creeping ludwig
Ludwig Red needs nutritious soil. If the plant is planted in an aquarium, where there is a muddy bottom, then micronutrients will be enough. When planting in a new aquarium, it is better to introduce additional nutrition, in the form of clay lumps. Coarse sand, sprinkled with a layer of up to 4 cm, is also needed. The plant does not tolerate larger soil, because the root system is poorly developed.
Ludwig red grows all twelve months of the year. Aquariums of any size are suitable for her, preferably with a small water level.
For creeping ludvigia, it is recommended to maintain a water temperature of 20-26 ° C. For the good development of the plant, it is necessary to ensure that the aquarium is clean, no plaque forms on the surface of the leaf plates. Avoid growing on ludwig red algae.
The plant must be lit for at least 12 hours; natural light is best suited for this. If the lighting is too bright, algae can grow on the leaves.
If ludwigia red began to lose the lower leaves, it is necessary to dig it out, most likely, the roots have rotted. After that, remove all damaged parts and put them in a new place.
