Horizontal echinodorus is common in the Amazon. Heart-shaped leaves are parallel to the ground, which makes this plant particularly attractive. The bush grows to 25 cm in height. The leaves are rather large: 20 cm long and 15 cm wide. They are broadly oval towards the base, the tip is pointed, which is directed downward from the leaf plate. The color of the leaf depends on the conditions of the plant, from yellow-green to light green. Young leaves are light brown. The leaf has about seven veins. Echinodorus grows year-round, slowing growth only in the spring-autumn period.
Warm aquariums with a water temperature of 22 to 24 degrees are suitable for keeping. It grows for a long time, to accelerate growth, you need to lower the temperature to 20 degrees.
Water should be soft rather than hard, but it does not really matter. The acidic environment categorically does not suit the plant, in it it grows poorly and can die. At first, in such an environment, echinodorus will grow quite quickly, but over time, if it does not create suitable conditions, it will die. Water must be replaced regularly.
Lighting should be quite intense. The power of lighting devices should be 0.4 watts per liter of water. Luminescent or incandescent lamps are suitable for lighting, which must be placed on top, directly above the bush.
A powerful root system needs good soil, its thickness should be at least 6 centimeters. Pebbles and fine fractions are best. Soil should be slightly weak and rich in iron content. With a lack of this trace element, the leaves may fade and decrease in size. To replenish iron deficiency once a month, it is necessary to add iron sulfate to the water at 0.2 g per liter of water. It is necessary to carefully monitor the mineral top dressing, and spend it in small doses about one to two grams per 100 liters of water. With a frequent change of water, nitrogen starvation can be observed in the plant. Echinodorus is very responsive to an excess of sodium ions, so add baking soda to the water very carefully, and adding salt is generally not recommended.
It grows with a rather large spreading bush, therefore it is suitable for aquariums with a large bottom area, the leaves are located almost vertically to the ground and therefore take up quite a lot of space.
In spring and autumn, growth is slowing down and there is a period of rest, which lasts a month and a half. During this period, it is desirable to lower the temperature. It grows much slower than other species of this plant.
Reproduction occurs vegetatively, due to the formation of daughter plants on the arrows of the flower. As a rule, one plant appears on each antennae, sometimes two. They are located at the very tip of the mustache, so they are easy to press to the ground and give time to root. After a couple of leaves appear, it is separated from the mother plant and transplanted separately into the soil, which includes coarse sand, silt and clay. On the antennae remaining after removal of the plant, a new plant appears over time. He is dealt with in the same way as with the previous one.
The flower stalk reaches 60 cm, from two to four whorls are located on it, in which from three to six flowers. They are located on pedicels, 1.5 cm long and have three white petals. Flowers open and self-pollinate on the surface of the water.
